Merrigong Theatre Company presents the Australian premiere of the vivid new drama Angel by Henry Naylor. Direct from its sold-out season at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and following international rave reviews, this powerful performance will be showcased at Mittagong Playhouse and Illawarra Performing Arts Centre (IPAC) from 7th to 11th February, 2017.
In 2014, the Northern Syrian town of Kobane is under siege by ISIS. The Jihadis are armed with modern tanks, howitzers and thousands of machine guns; the desperate people of Kobane, with only determination and ageing Russian rifles. Defeat seems inevitable. But after brutal siege, the attackers are surprisingly driven back. Instrumental in turning the tide are a group of female soldiers called the YPJ. Rehana, a pistachio farmer’s daughter turned crack-shot sniper, is at the center of the fighting – she soon becomes the target of an ISIS manhunt from which she is destined to be known as the Angel of Kobane.
Starring Avital Lvova in the role of Rehana, Angel is a beautifully-scripted and is spellbinding portrayal inspired by the true story of the ‘Angel of Kobane’.
To complement the season, a free Merrigong Talking Point will be held on Saturday 11 February at IPAC, with special guests including playwright Henry Naylor in conversation with local resident and former Kurdish refugee Burhan Zangana. This conversation will be facilitated by Merrigong’s Community Engagement Coordinator Lilian Rodrigues-Pang, and is a free event.
